How Secure Are Texas Businesses?
HOUSTON, May 1, 2002 – Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Michael Williams is among dignitaries addressing plans for Texas homeland security at the Lone Star Security Summit today at 11:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Houston Hotel.
Williams, who serves as Chair of the governor’s Homeland Security Taskforce Workgroup on Infrastructure Issues will present the keynote address, Security for the Lone Star State: Prevention and Preparedness for Texas Business and Government.
The summit, co-hosted by Stonebridge Technologies and AeA Texas Council, will offer a comprehensive discussion of Texas’ public and private sector security preparedness, with an emphasis on Houston-area businesses.
The event will focus on the unique security challenges - from corporate IT security to countering cyber-terrorism - faced by today’s companies. Topics to be covered also include the airline industry’s Trusted Passenger program and the Texas attorney general’s efforts to strengthen Texas’ cyber-security.
Dr. Kemble Bennett, director of Texas Task Force 1, will give a special presentation concerning his involvement in search and rescue efforts at New York’s Ground Zero. Bennett, appointed by President George W. Bush to lead the U.S. Department of Justice Domestic Preparedness Assessment and Strategy Development for Texas, also will discuss how Texas is preparing its emergency first-responders to deal with potential terrorist threats, including biological, chemical and physical attacks.
Additionally, the event will feature a panel discussion on global, national and state-level security issues by a group of public and private sector experts, including the following:
- Geoffrey Binney, supervisory special agent, counter-terrorism/computer crimes, Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Reid Wittliff, division chief, Texas Internet Bureau, Office of the Attorney General
- R. Blake Young, CIO and president, Global Technology, Dynegy Inc.
- Hank Johnson, vice president of infrastructure solutions, Stonebridge Technologies
- Michael Shultz, president and CEO, Infoglide Software Corporation
- Robert DeBerardine, partner, business and technology group, Brobeck Phleger & Harrison LLP
“We are pleased to join AeA in bringing this event to the Houston business community,” said Stonebridge Technologies CEO James Ivy. “The level of concern around security issues and the vulnerability of business-critical systems and processes has certainly heightened since September 11, and all businesspeople - from the boardroom to the mailroom - are taking a more proactive role in corporate security. The Lone Star Security Summit will give Houston-area business leaders the opportunity to dialogue with security experts about making their businesses less vulnerable.”
“Security concerns have become increasingly important in the last year, and businesses are required to take complex steps to put their security procedures in order,” said Johnny Anderson, executive director of the AeA Texas Council. “Attendees of the security summit will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight from the speakers and panelists regarding ways to maximize the security of Texas businesses.”
